The City of Raleigh has canceled the big annual Raleigh Wide Open event that takes place each year in downtown, blaming the bad economy.
They also state that there is no big projects opening in downtown this year that have coincided with previous Raleigh Wide Opens. Also, they say that the NHL All-Star Wide Open as a similar event that happened in January.
The event is said to cost the city between $150,000 and $180,000 and the city says the money can be better used making sure no essential services are cut for Raleigh residents.
