Joshua Bell to play with the NC Symphony in January

Masterful violinist Joshua Bell is set to play a show with the North Carolina Symphony in January. Bell will play Max Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy with the orchestra at the Meymandi Concert Hall in Raleigh on January 14.

I know what you're thinking. That's eight months away. Why should I care now. Well, you can buy pre-sale tickets right now thru June 5 at 5 pm. Go here and enter the pre-sale password VIOLIN. Tickets will run you $70, $60 or $50. The general on sale date for the show is August 17 at 9 am.

I still love the Washington Post experiment in 2007 where Bell played in a DC subway station and went almost completely ignored as he play some of the most difficult classical pieces there are. Check out the article and video here.

Superchunk to release 'Crossed Wires' 7" in July

Former Wilco member Jay Bennett passes at 45

Former Wilco keyboard player and guitarist Jay Bennett died in his sleep on Sunday morning at the age of 45. The cause is currently unknown.

Bennett's playing can be heard on all of Wilco's albums from Being There to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. His departure from the band was documented in the film I Am Trying To Break Your Heart. At the time of his death, Bennett had been working on his fifth solo album titled Kicking at the Perfumed Air. His last album Whatever Happened I Apologize was distributed for free and is still available to download via Rock Proper Netlabel.

Check out David Menconi's post about Bennett's passing which is really well written and very interesting. I honestly know very little about him outside of the contention documented in I Am Trying To Break Your Heart. It's always sad to lose such talented musicians while they're still young.

Read Jeff Tweedy's statement released about Bennett's passing below.
"We are all deeply saddened by this tragedy. We will miss Jay as we remember him -- as a truly unique and gifted human being and one who made welcome and significant contributions to the band's songs and evolution. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends in this very difficult time."

Chatham County Line fans brave ticks, sunburn at Bond Park

Chatham County Line kicked off a series of free concerts sponsored by PineCone and the Town of Cary Saturday at Bond Park's Sertoma Amphitheater.

The last time I think I spent any considerable amount of time at Sertoma Amphitheater was during summer camp in the 8th grade when my group was supposed to be doing orienteering exercises. This was considerably more fun.

Despite the heat and threat of rain, the four piece filled the amphitheater's metal bleachers and then some, with a smattering of folks camped out on the pine straw in the back with lawn chairs and blankets.

New Telekinesis video - "Awkward Kisser"

Blink 182 announces summer dates, set for Charlotte

Blink 182 will embark on their first tour in five years this summer and fall and it's a big one. The band currently have 48 shows scheduled and though those dates do not include a Triangle show, the trio will play Charlotte's Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre on October 1. No ticket info is available yet.

The tour is set to host a grab bag of big openers for the dates including Weezer, Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, Asher Roth and Chester French. Which openers will play which dates have not been announced yet. Fall Out Boy, All-American Rejects, and Asher Roth will open the Charlotte show. The fanclub pre-sale starts on May 27 at 10am with other pre-sales on following days. The general on-sale date is May 30 at 10am.

Blink 182's big return performance will be on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on May 21, though the band technically played their first show last night at a private party.

I saw about two songs of a Blink 182 set years ago at Walnut Creek when they toured with Green Day and I was glad Green Day played first. Travis Barker is a really good drummer, but Mark Hoppus and Tom DeLonge just simply couldn't sing. They butchered the two songs I saw before leaving. Hopefully they've acquired some much needed skills in that area during their hiatus.

Rock Hall benefit lineup annouced

We've been getting a little bit of activity on our post announcing the 2nd Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame benefit concert, so I suppose it's worth letting you all know that the lineup has been announced.

Now, we didn't actually get a press release about the event (maybe because I was formally dis-invited last year?), and I wasn't intending to write about the event/give it any publicity at all, but clearly our readers want more! (Really, I love you guys.)

And the lineup is...

Darryl McDaniels, best known as D.M.C
Patty Smyth and Scandal
94 East
Blessid Union of Souls
Nine Days
Freddy Jones Band
Atlanta Rhythm Section
Georgia Satellites
White Sox All-Star Band

So...yeah. There is one hall of famer on the list (Darryl McDaniels), but the rest is a pretty random mishmash of southern rock and people who have played Downtown Live. But hey, at least they announced the lineup before tickets go on sale! Which, if you're interested, that happens tomorrow via Ticketmaster, and prices range from $35-100 with a handful of 4-pack lawn tickets for $96 while "supplies" last.

So, what do you guys think? Is Rick French gonna start spreading rumors that Jam Master Jay was stopped at the stage door by town officials like last year's ridiculous Pete Townshend debacle?

New music from Megafaun, new album in July

Local trio Megafaun are about to drop their new album Gather, Form & Fly on the world in a couple of months. The album will be released via Hometapes on July 21 as a double vinyl that will include a CD and download of the album too. The new album was mixed by dB's man Chris Stamey which will give the album a little more polish than their previous releases.

Download the the track "The Fade" from the album below and enjoy. It's quite a tasty little tune.

The Physics of Meaning cover The Smiths

The Physics of Meaning recently teamed up with music blog The Music Slut for their tribute to Morrissey's 50th birthday. To celebrate the occasion, the blog has been releasing covers of Morrissey tunes. Today's song is The Physics of Meaning covering The Smiths tune "The Boy With the Thorn in His Side." The song just features strings and vocals which turns out really cool. Click the link below to go to The Music Slut to download the tune.

This Friday, May 15, from 10am to 7pm, LiveNation will offer $10 lawn seats to select concerts at Walnut Creek with no service fees if you purchase tickets at the venue box office. A similar promotion is being held for Charlotte's Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre on Saturday, May 16. The $10 price is also available online but will include service fees, likely doubling the cost of the ticket.

Included shows at Walnut Creek:
June 8: No Doubt, Paramore and The Sounds
June 23: Bad Company and the Doobie Brothers
July 5: 311, Ziggy Marley & The Expendables
July 7: Aerosmith and ZZ Top
July 24: Kid Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Black Stone Cherry
August 1: Nickelback, Hinder, Papa Roach and Saving Abel
August 7: Def Leppard, Poison and Cheap Trick
August 23: Crue Fest 2

[UPDATE: We received a question about the box office fees so we thought we'd share with you an image of what the promotion specifically said.]

New Kids on the Block cancel in Raleigh and Charlotte

Well, this settles my internal debate about how badly I really wanted to go see New Kids on the Block.

The Kids have canceled their shows in both Charlotte and Raleigh, scheduled for June 2 and 3. I wouldn't hold my breath for these dates to be rescheduled — this little reunion spree can only last so long...

Due to unforeseen production delays, the summer NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK tour has made necessary changes to the tour dates and venues. The concerts scheduled to take place on June 2nd at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre Charlotte and on June 3rd at Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion in Raleigh have been canceled.

Tickets purchased online or via phones will be refunded automatically starting Tuesday May 12. Tickets purchased at the venue box offices or at BLOCKBUSTER stores can be refunded at point of purchase starting Wednesday May 13.
