Album Review: Wood Ear - Steeple Vultures
“Been the hottest summer that I’ve known,” begins lead singer Nate Tarr on the opening title track of Wood Ear’s newest album, Steeple Vultures, and the band makes the listener sweat.
“Steeple Vultures” swelters. The humid harmonica and guitar radiate thick waves of heat. Like summer in North Carolina, the pressure from the warmth can seem comforting until it begins to burn. Booming drums and sharp guitars turn the second half of the track into a scorcher.

For many in the crowd, it was their first time seeing Dawes (as evidenced by a show of hands when polled by frontman Taylor Goldsmith), but you couldn't tell by the way they belted out the lyrics to "When My Time Comes" and "How Far We've Come." The band fed off the crowd's energy, with Goldsmith noting that Cat's Cradle is one of the band's favorite venues to play, in large part due to the audience.

Album Review: The dB's - Falling Off the Sky
Maybe it’s all the barbecue and Cheerwine, but North Carolina bands age better than others. After 30 years, the original lineup of The dB’s is back together and, like their Tar Heel brethren like Superchunk and Polvo, their new album, Falling Off the Sky, is not nostalgic fan service.
Vocalist, guitarist and song writer Peter Holsapple wastes no time brushing off the past. “You better wake up, wake up, wake up! That time is gone,” he sings on the energetic, bluesy opening track, “That Time Is Gone.”

The Beast & Big Band flex musical muscles at Motorco
Photos by Kevin Norris |
The Beast made the show special by bringing along eight additional musicians bringing the total number onstage to twelve. While the use of the extra musicians started out a little odd with an extra long version of "Four Seasons" featuring long musical passages highlighting the additional players, things locked into place throughout the rest of the set with the brass, strings, guitar and percussion enhancing the band's sound and making the show a ton of fun.

Album Review: Crocodiles - Endless Flowers
With a new label (French Kicks) and three new members in tow, Crocodiles sounds like a brand new band on their third LP, Endless Flowers.
Crocodiles has begun to let their melody drive songs rather than relying on a flood of noise to sweep listeners away. The band has stripped away a layer of noise and added a layer of 60s psychedelia. As a result, these songs are brighter and more nimble.
Right away the difference can be heard. Opener “Endless Flowers” feels almost danceable, something Crocodiles has rarely approached. Songs like “No Black Clouds for Dee Dee” and “Bubblegum Trash” could even be described as sugary and sweet sounding, a long way from the grit and grime of their first record, Summer of Hate.

DMX announces summer tour, coming to Raleigh
Gravely-voiced rapper DMX is gearing up for a big comeback in 2012. He'll release his first album in six years, Undisputed, at some point this year. The album was originally due out in the spring, but a new date has not been announced yet.
That won't stop DMX from heading out on tour this summer, includinga stop at Starbar in Raleigh on Friday, June 15. Starbar is not generally a venue, and there is no word on tickets or anything, so you'll probably just want to get there early that Friday.
Even though Undisputed doesn't have a release date yet, you can check out the album's first single, "I Don't Dance," below.
