DEFINTELY going to see this one! Bought the ticket months ago!
Steve Vai @ the Orange Peel
I must say it is disappointing to have driven 2.5 hrs. and spent 30$ + apiece for ticket’s and get a room downtown only to hear a less than perfect sound system and expecting to be impressed by a (master guitarist ) perhaps I expected too much.
The sound was not good, the guitar, and harp were buried under the percussion I wasn’t sure if the sound board was even utilized it appeared to be a cheap Yamaha used more for DJs, n hip hop crap and was set to mid-levels and left there . The result was pure muddiness only during solos was the guitar and harp audible and weren’t soaring and clear as they well should have been.
All this was confirmed by my wife’s attending her 1st concert and even to her untrained ear it was painfully obvious the sound was lacking.
Although early in the tour the band already seems road weary probably best bet is to see them at a larger venue perhaps then it will be as this show should have been.
Beverley McCellan has a very powerful voice and with tempering could be very nice but as I say the sound system let the people down.
The Asheville crowd seemed sedated or unfamiliar with Vai’s work or perhaps they too were uninspired by the performance.
The term coming in and taking a dump and leaving comes to mind
Also Steve’s website Steve Vai.com has disabled concert reviews ;go wonder.
In short save your $$ and go to larger venues to see them if you wish.
