Buckingham took the stage alone, playing the first six songs solo, explaining that it was a way to reconnect with his formative years when he was teaching himself to play the guitar. He kicked things off with "Shut Us Down" and wrapped the solo portion of the set with two Fleetwood Mac classics, "Never Going Back Again" and the ferocious "Big Love."
As his three piece band joined him on stage, they launched into the breathy "Under the Skin." Later, came one of the highlights of the set, "In Our Own Time," from the new album. The explosive synths mixed with Buckingham's frantic guitar licks on the chorus were spectacular.
The crowd was incredibly enthusiastic about the performance, with many giving him a standing ovation after every song. Some of the Fleetwood Mac tunes, including "Second Hand News" and a raucous version of "Tusk" got some of the most exuberant response of the evening.
The main set ended with a great version of one of Fleetwood Mac's biggest hits, "Go Your Own Way." After a brief break, the band returned for a fantastic encore including the catchy "Turn It On" and the subdued "Treason."
As the band left, Buckingham stuck around to play of final song by himself, the beautiful title track from his new album Seeds We Sow.
The show was dynamic, exciting and a true joy to experience and a great way to christen the newly renovated Carolina Theatre. The upgraded sound system sounded amazing, the room looked vibrant and it was great to finally see the box seats being used.
