Arcade Fire's 'The Suburbs' is the #1 album in the U.S.

After a big push by Merge Records, fans and supporters of independent music, Arcade Fire has done it. Their new album The Suburbs has the number one album in U.S. It will debut on the Billboard 200 album charts at the top after selling a reported 156,000+ copies in it's first week, beating out Eminem's latest album The Recovery which was released in June.

This is a huge accomplishment for both the band and Durham based Merge Records. Arcade Fire's second album Neon Bible was the previous high mark for both the band and the label, debuting at number two.

The Suburbs is also the number one album in the United Kingdom this week, so that's huge too. The band just played a triumphant headlining set at Lollapalooza as well as two nights at Madison Square Garden, the second of which was webcast on YouTube. Check out numerous videos from that performance below.
