The fifth band of the night traveled quite a way to play the XX Merge Festival. I speak of the New Zealand group the 3Ds.
The band's noisy, space rock delighted the crowded Cradle who seem to really latch on to a trio of tracks from the album The Venus Trail, released by Merge in 1994. "The Young and the Restless," "Beautiful Things" and "Hey Seuss" had the crowd cheering.
Most interesting to watch was guitarist Dave Mitchell, who played with his back to the crowd most of the night unless he was singing or pumping away at his wah pedal. At the end of the of the set, he tossed his guitar down on the edge of the drum riser. The rest of the group looked a bit puzzled. I'm not sure if that was the planned end of the set.
