XX Merge to be a 5 day music extravaganza

The area's various music blogs are abuzz today -- and for a very good reason. Merge Records has announced a 5 day music extravaganza, XX Merge, as part of their yearlong 20th anniversary celebration. The shows will take place during the peak of summer, July 22-26.

I'd personally been hoping for something like this ever since the Chapel Hill-based label announced SCORE!, the subscription-only box set compilation of the label's best, so today's news is very happy indeed.

No word yet who will play or where this nearly-weeklong event will be held, but considering the Merge's track record, and even just their releases of the past 5 years, I daresay this could be the biggest music event the Triangle has seen this decade -- certainly enough to blow that little concert last year out of the water.

By the way, it's not too late to place your order for SCORE!, which will include 14 compilation CDs, a remix CD, covers CD and a whole bunch more. Goodies will be delivered to you over the course of 2009. Place your order online and check in to the SCORE! blog throughout the year.

This is great news! I'm hoping for Arcade Fire and Spoon. That would make my year.
