The brand new Durham Performing Arts Center just opened Sunday with 83-year-old bluesmaster B.B. King christening the new venue. The folks running the 2,800 capacity theatre are off-and-running with their winter and spring schedule. A host of big name musicians and comedians are already set to perform and the list just keeps growing.
Among the recent additions are John Prine, David Sedaris, Anthony Bourdain and the "70's Soul Jam" featuring The Delfonics, The Manhattans, The Sylistics, The Main Ingredient and Jimmie "J.J. Walker (yeah, Mr. Dy-no-mite from Good Times).
While the venue is off to a great start, let's hope they can start pulling some of the bigger "indie" rock acts that have started skipping the Triangle and sometimes North Carolina all together when planning their tours. So far, the closest thing to a rock show on the DPAC schedule is Aaron Lewis of Staind. Blech.
Here's the current DPAC schedule.
12.03.08 - Lewis Black
12.11.08 - Kenny Rogers
12.13.08 - John Legend w/ Raphael Sadiq
12.17.08 - Harry Connick Jr.
