Album Review: Tracey Thorn - Love and Its Opposite

With her third solo album Love and Its Opposite, Tracey Thorn, best known as half of the duo Everything But the Girl, lets her enchanting voice shine on a solid collection songs.

The albums kicks off with a pair of beautifully somber songs, "Oh, the Divorces!" and "Long White Dress" before shifting gears, showing off her poppy side on the sonically upbeat song "Hormones."

While the bulk of the album does trend towards mellow and somber songs, Thorn does break away from time to time. The irresistible combination of an amazing groove, simple synth lines and beautiful melody on "Why Does the Wind" makes it a standout song.

The art piece of the album is "C'mon Home To Me" which features droning atmospheric piano and the deep guest vocals of Jens Lekman.

Overall, Love and Its Opposite builds the music around Thorn's compelling and enchanting voice. The music falls in perfectly around it making for a fantastic listen. Don't let this album pass you by.

Love and Its Opposite will be released on May 18 via Merge Records.
