As the sun went down on a balmy Saturday at Central Durham Park in downtown Durham, local rock superstars Superchunk took to the stage to raise money to build fences and unchain dogs. The band tore through a family friendly set (so no "Slack Motherfucker") for the loyal and sometimes a wee bit rowdy crowd at the show.
The band kicked things off with "Cursed Mirror" from 1999's Come Pick Me Up before rolling right into "Seed Toss." The set featured two of the band's newest songs that have become set staples "Crossed Wires" (video here) and "Learned To Surf."
The nice thing about seeing Superchunk is that they don't play the same set at each show. The band only repeated six songs from their XX Merge set last month, opting for some rarer cuts including "Nu Bruises," "The Question is How Fast" and "From the Curve."
The set wasn't without its problems though. It seems that Jim cursed the band by saying at the beginning of their set that all of their previous Durham shows hadn't gone too well. Shortly after saying that, sound system problems became abundant. At one point, Laura decided to sacrifice her monitor so the crowd could actually hear the vocals. The PA that was provided just couldn't seem to handle a full on rock show. It also seemed like the stage could give at any moment. When Mac and Laura jumped around on the stage, the panels would bend a bit too much for comfort.
With that said, Superchunk charged through and put on a memorable show, closing the main set with the classic tune "Precision Auto." The left the stage and quickly returned to play another classic "Hyper Enough."
Check out the set list from the show as well as photos below. There are also some photos of Regina Hexaphone who played a lovely little set before Superchunk.

The two earlier bands--The KinKsmen and Rey NorteƱo--were great as well! A wonderful afternoon and evening, and once the sun went down it was quite lovely.
