Coldplay bring 'Viva la Vida' to Raleigh, play multiple stages

Coldplay rolled into Raleigh Friday night—I mean Thursday night (Chris Martin thought it was Friday at one point)—and brought down the house at the TWC Pavilion. The band played a two-hour set relying heavily on their latest album Viva La Vida while still hitting a lot of the greatest hits for the fans.

The stage show was a fun little spectacle that included releasing a bunch of yellow balls that were bounced around the crowd during "Yellow" and canons firing butterfly confetti during "Lovers in Japan."

The band also set up two remote stages that they visited during the show. The first was in the right side of the reserved seating. They played a funky, danceable version of "God Put a Smile On Your Face" that led straight into "Talk."

After returning to the main stage for the hits "Viva La Vida" and "Lost" the band set sail again, this time for a stage set up on the lawn. The short acoustic set included the lovely tune "Green Eyes" and drummer Will Champion then took lead vocals on "Death Will Never Conquer." The third and final song on the lawn was "Billie Jean," a tribute to the late Michael Jackson. The crowd joyfully sang along with the fun, ragtag version of the tune. Check out a video of the song below the set list (the video is bad, but the audio is pretty good).

The band wrapped up the main portion of the set back on the main stage with the thunderous "Politik," the upbeat"Lovers In Japan" and dynamic "Death and All His Friends."

The encore was a little anti-climactic. They closed with "The Scientist" and "Life in Technicolor II," both of which are great songs, but it wasn't as dramatic as when the band closed with "Fix You" at the amphitheatre in 2005.

In the end, Coldplay proved once again that even though they have a lot of naysayers, they have staying power. With only four albums under their belt, we can expect to see a lot more of Coldplay in years to come.

Bands of this size generally have opening acts who provide little more than background music to imbibe to. Thankfully, that wasn't the case last night. Kitty, Daisy & Lewis played a tight rockabilly set, but the real stars were Elbow - who very simply rocked the place down. I was looking forward to their set to begin with, and I was still surprised at their command of the stage. Elbow could have easily played another hour of excellent music.

Thanks to both of you for your input—we don't mean to ignore Elbow but only caught the last couple songs of their set due to traffic, etc. But from what I saw, I thought they were very good and definitely captured the crowd's attention for the most part, which is no easy task.
