London band White Lies have come out swinging with their debut album To Lose My Life. While the band's dark, Cure-esque sound may not be groundbreaking, the strong melodies and well crafted songs make the album worth a listen.
Singer Harry McVeigh's voice is a prominent part of White Lies' sound. It resembles a mash-up of Robert Smith (The Cure), Brandon Flowers (The Killers) and Craig Pfunder (VHS or Beta). In other words, he's got very moody, yet melodic voice.
There are a lot of great tracks on the album and really the only lowlight is "Nothing To Give." The song drones on for over four minutes yet doesn't really go anywhere. Highlights of the album include "To Lose My Life," "Unfinished Business," "From the Stars" and the opening track "Death" which you can download below thanks to SXSW.com.
White Lies smart, catchy melodies will fare them well on this side of the Atlantic. Look for them on the Late Show with David Letterman next Tuesday night, March 24 and check out the band's North American dates below.
To Lose My Life will be out in the US tomorrow, March 17 via Geffen Records.
