Carolina Chocolate Drops hit Daytrotter Studio

Durham string band the Carolina Chocolate Drops hit the Daytrotter Studios recently and the five-song session just made it's way online.

The band played a mix of tunes, including "Po, Black Sheep" from Dom Flemons 2009 solo album American Songster,  "Sourwood Mountain" from the Drops album Dona Got a Ramblin' Mind, a smooth version of "Why Don't You Do It Right?" from Genuine Negro Jig and a few unreleased songs, "Skillet Good and Greasy" and "Julianne Johnson/Arkansas Traveler."

The Love Language return to Daytrotter for round three

Just a week following the release of The Love Language's second HearYa Session, the band's third Daytrotter session has been posted.

The band played the songs "Heart To Tell," and "This Room" from Libraries, though "This Room" is one of their many alternate versions of the tune, this one sounding a bit like The Cure.

They also played a new song, that is simply listed as "Untitled No. 2." The band have been playing the raucous new song live for a little while now, including at their show at the Cat's Cradle in January. Also, the song listed as "Summer Dust" is not the band's song from Libraries, but a cover of the song "Dust" by the 1960s band 13th Floor Elevators.

Lonnie Walker plays some new songs for Daytrotter

So many of the best bands in the Triangle have stopped by Daytrotter now, I've lost count, but today, spastic rockers Lonnie Walker have joined the ranks.

The band performed two songs from their debut album These Times Old Times, "Compass Comforts" and "Grape Juice." They guys also performed two new songs "Love Turn," recently released on a split 7" with Future Islands, and "Teenage Poem."

American Aquarium records session for Daytrotter

There is now one more Triangle band to add to the growing list of those who have recorded a session for the very popular site Daytrotter. Raleigh band American Aquarium's session has just been made available to download and stream here.

Three of the four songs of the session are from the band's latest album Small Town Hymns, "Rattlesnake," "Hurricane" and "Reidsville." They also played the song "Bigger In Texas" from their 2008 album Bones.

American Aquarium's next local show is at The Pour House in Raleigh on Saturday, December 4 with House of Fools. Advance tickets are available here for $8. Check out the rest of the band's tour scheduled below.

Gayngs release a four-song session via Daytrotter

Apparently it's Gayngs Friday here at Triangle Music. In addition to making really some really cool videos, the group also recently recorded a session in Eau Claire, WI which they've released via Daytrotter.

The session includes the songs "The Gaudy Side of Town," "No Sweat" and "Crystal Rope" from their debut album as well as the excellent unreleased ballad "By Your Side," which is a Sade cover (thanks for the tip Ben). Click here to download or stream the session.

And once again, Gayngs will be at the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro on Wednesday, Oct. 9. Tickets are available via etix for $17.

Lost in the Trees plays unreleased song for Daytrotter

There's no denying that Daytrotter is one of the coolest music sites around these days and they seem to like bands from the Triangle. The Rosebuds, Annuals, Megafaun and others have recorded sessions for them. Now they've added another Triangle band to the list, Lost in the Trees, who just re-released their stellar album All Alone in an Empty House in August.

The band played three songs from the album, the title track, "Walk Around the Lake" and "Song For the Painter." They also performed a really great unreleased song called "An Artists Song." Stream or download the session here.

Lambchop plays sweet session for Daytrotter

Nashville band and Merge Records recording artists Lambchop recently recorded a session for Daytrotter in their hometown. The product is one of the sweetest sounding sessions Daytrotter has ever released.

The set includes "The Daily Growl" and "Please Rise" from the albums Is a Woman and Ohio respectively. There is also an excellent cover of John Prine's "Six O'Clock News" and what appears to be a new song titled "Buttons" (the title originally showed up as "Better Days" in the ID3 info) which is fantastic.

Megafaun plays a groovy set for Daytrotter

I mentioned back in January when we posted The Rosebuds' Daytrotter session that I'd love to hear a Megafaun session, and know that wish has been granted. The band's session went up on Saturday and features "Gather, Form & Fly," "Kaufman's Ballad," a funkalicious version "His Robe" and an extra-long version of "Drains," clocking in at 10 minutes. The Rosebuds play session for Daytrotter

The Rosebuds have just become the latest local band to be featured on the supercool Daytrotter website and really, it's about time. The band still promoting their 2008 album Life Like played three songs from the album including "Life Like, "Cape Fear" and "Border Guards." Click here to download or stream the session.

Now I'd like to hear Megafaun record a Daytrotter session. That would be fantastic.

Bombadil perform 'Tarpit' tunes for Daytrotter

Bombadil may not currently be able to perform live shows due to Daniel Michalak's tendonitis, that didn't keep the group from recording a session for Daytrotter to promote their latest album Tarpits and Canyonlands. The band session is currently available to download here, which features four songs.

The set list is "Kate and Kelsey," "Oto the Bear," "So Many Ways To Die" and "Cavaliers." The stripped down versions of the songs are quite good, especially "Oto the Bear" which replaces the album's piano riff with guitar.

The Love Language return to Daytrotter

It's been less than five months since The Love Language's first Daytrotter session was posted, but they're already up for round two. This time, the band played the fantastic new song titled "This Blood is Our Own." They also played the song at their recent Duke Gardens show. The rest of the set comes from the band's self-titled debut an includes "Two Rabbits," "Night Dogs" and "Stars." Download or stream the session here.

The Love Language are currently on tour with Cursive which will wrap next week. The band will return to the Triangle for a free show at the Locally Grown show the at Wallace Deck in Chapel Hill on Thursday, August 20 with Lost in the Trees. Check out all of the band's upcoming dates below.

The Avett Brothers SXSW Daytrotter session is up

The Avett Brothers Daytrotter session that they record at the South By Southwest music conference in March has finally been released. The group only played one song, "Laundry Room," from the band's forthcoming album I and Love and You, set for release on September 29. Go here to download or stream the session.

Bowerbirds return to Daytrotter for new session

Bowerbirds recently took the time record their second session for Daytrotter. The four-song session features three songs from the band's new album Upper Air, which was just released today as well as a song from their previous album Hymns For a Dark Horse.

Roman Candle plays new songs for Daytrotter

While on tour in April, Roman Candle recorded some new songs from Oh Tall Tree in the Ear, which is out now, for Daytrotter. The session has now been posted online for you to download and/or stream. The set includes "They Say," "Eden Was a Garden," "Why Modern Radio is A-OK" and "Starting From Scratch."

The session has an old school sound too it. Skip's vocals have a lot of reverb and distort when he sings louder passages. It really works with their sound. Check out the session here.

Annuals return to Daytrotter

Annuals recorded a new session for Daytrotter recently that was posted on Friday. Four tracks are available to download including "Confessor," "Always Do" and "Springtime" from Such Fun and "Around Your Neck" from the Wet Zoo EP. The performances are incredibly good and the recording is amazing. Download the tracks here.

Annuals will hit the road in 2009 for a long tour with What Laura Says and Jessica Lea Mayfield which will stop at the Cat's Cradle on January 31. Check out the rest of the dates here.

Everybodyfields play three new songs for Daytrotter

The Everybodyfields are currently taking a month and a half off from touring to rest up and write some songs for a new album they hope to release next year. You don't have to wait to hear new songs though.

Daytrotter recently posted a four song session from the band that includes three new songs. The new songs include "I've Been Riding On A Strange Wave," "Suite: Motown" and "Worth Keeping" along with "Lonely Anywhere" from Nothing Is Okay.

The Everybodyfields will be back in the Triangle on Halloween to play the Cat's Cradle with Will Hoge. The two bands will team up for a series of dates from October to November.

The Physics of Meaning featured on Daytrotter

While posting on Monday about Spoon being featured on Daytrotter, I completely missed the fact that Durham band The Physics of Meaning were featured only a few days earlier. The band played four songs for Daytrotter which included an unreleased song titled "Annabelle Lee." The song is an Edgar Allen Poe poem set to music which ends up coming out sounding like a Jeff Buckley song. It's quite good.

The Physics of Meaning just wrapped up a tour on Sunday in Alexandria, VA. The band currently have no shows on their schedule, but bassist Wil Wright will stay busy playing shows in Alexandria and New York with his band Senryu.

Spoon plays Paul Simon cover for Daytrotter

Spoon recently recorded a session for Daytrotter which includes their version of Paul Simon's "Peace Like a River." The session also includes "The Ghost of You Lingers" from Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, "I Can See the Dude" from Soft Effects and "Back To the Life" from Kill the Moonlight.
