Foo Fighters play epic 35-song set for Rock the Vote in Charlotte

Arena rock superstars Foo Fighters stopped at the Fillmore in Charlotte for a rare club show on Wednesday night to support Rock the Vote and die-hard fans were treated to a 35-song set that clocked in at just over three hours.

The band brought their A-game, rolling through a set of greatest hits combined with songs from their latest album Wasting Light, all of which sounded phenomenal. The band rocked through a cover of Tom Petty's "Breakdown" towards the end of "Dear Rosemary," which delighted the crowd.

The old classic "I'll Stick Around" was a fiery inclusion in the set and the band took on the Paul McCartney classic "Jet," a song they hadn't played since a MusicCares concert honoring McCartney earlier this year.

The band closed out the main set with "This is a Call," an outstanding cover of Pink Floyd's "In the Flesh" and the rock anthem "Best of You."

At some point during the set, Grohl wandered through the crowd and upon returning to the stage noted that he had a shot at the bar and the show might likely go on for a good while. As the encore kicked in, he certainly made good on his earlier statement.

The band played a 15-song encore, mostly comprised of older songs rarely heard live anymore including "Winnebago," "Wattershed," "New Way Home," "Alone + Easy Target" and "Exhausted." Other fantastic inclusions were the melodic "Aurora," the mellow "Skin and Bones" and even "See You," which was a bit sloppy at times but was a fun inclusion for diehard fans. The band was clearly winging it, as Grohl would often consult Pat Smear asking what songs they could play that he was forgetting.

The band closed with the song Dave Grohl said he'd been avoiding all night since it was the last song on the set list. It was the classic "Everlong" which was a great ending to an unforgettable evening with one of only a few great arena rock bands of their generation.
