We have sad, sad news this evening. Legendary North Carolina bluegrass pioneer Doc Watson has died today at the age of 89.
Watson was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem last week after a fall at his home. After undergoing colon surgery, Watson was reportedly recovering in the hospital, though was still deemed to be in critical condition. Sadly, he passed today, May 29.
Check out an old performance of "Deep River Blues" which features closeups of Watson's world famous flattpicking style below.
Watson was scheduled to play the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh on June 30.
