New old music from Superchunk - "Born to Run" (Bruce Springsteen cover)

The 40th anniversary of Bruce Springsteen's classic 1975 album Born to Run was earlier this week and local indie rock icons Superchunk dug up a live cover of the album's title track to mark the occasion.

Their version of "Born to Run" was recorded in 2000 when Superchunk was on tour with ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead and Crooked Fingers. They closed each show with everyone on stage covering the song, including Eric Bachmann playing Clarence Clemons' classic saxophone solo. Check out it below.

Mac McCaughan of Superchunk will be playing the Hopscotch Music Festival in a couple of weeks. His set will be at the Lincoln Theatre at 9:30 on Thursday, September 10.

Bruce Springsteen announces spring tour, coming to Raleigh

The Boss, Bruce Springsteen, just released his 18th studio album earlier this year titled High Hopes and he has been in South Africa and Australia promoting it. Now he'll come back to the U.S. in the spring to head out on another tour that will bring him to the Triangle

Springsteen and The E Street Band will play the PNC Arena in Raleigh on Thursday, April 24. Tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 22 via the venue box office and Ticketmaster.

Bruce Springsteen announces 'Wrecking Ball' Tour, coming to Greensboro

Bruce Springsteen will release his seventeenth studio album on March 6 titled Wrecking Ball, and will hit the road with The E Street Band this spring to support it. The tour will be the first since the passing of saxophonist Clarence Clemons, and there has been no mention of whether someone will fill his role for these shows.

The second stop on the tour is at the Greensboro Coliseum on Monday, March 19. Tickets will go on sale on  Friday, February 3. Tickets will go on sale via the box office and Ticketmaster outlets at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 3 for $35, $68 or $98.

The Avett Brothers rock Bruce's "Glory Days"

The Avett Brothers, who are busy working on their major label debut with Rick Rubin, recently took some time to film a performance of Bruce Springsteen's "Glory Days." The video is part of a series on Springsteen's website called "Hangnin' On E Street" that features a variety of artists influenced by his music.

The Avetts video (which you can see below) is the latest in the series that also includes Bouncing Souls, Wyclef Jean, Juliana Hatfield, Mat Kearney, Against Me!, Ted Leo and The Gaslight Anthem. Upcoming videos will include Tegan and Sara, Pete Yorn, Josh Ritter, Nicole Atkins, Valencia and Birdmonster. Watch all of the videos here.

TV on the Radio leak Bonnaroo line-up

The Bonnaroo Music Festival's 2009 line-up was not supposed to be revealed until tomorrow, but TV on the Radio let it slip early on their MySpace blog. The Manchester, TN festival will feature headline sets Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band and the freshly reunited Phish. Phish will actually headline two nights. As one would expect, there are a ton of other great bands playing the festival including a few local ties including Tift Merritt and Bon Iver.

Check out the list of performers below. Each artist's individual performance day has yet to be released, but heck, the list as a whole isn't supposed to be out yet. Let us know if you plan to make the trek from North Carolina to Tennessee for the festival.

[A quick note: As I was writing this, Bonnaroo published the line-up. I wonder if TV on the Radio forced their hand? Either way, it's officialy out, though the site is running pretty slow. Check out their little video previewing the line-up at the bottom of the post.]

Bruce Spingsteen parties during Super Bowl halftime show

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band put on quite a halftime show during the Super Bowl XLIII. He kicked off his set with some instructions for the people watching at home. He said "I want you to step back from the guacamole, I want you to put the chicken fingers down and turn your television all the way up!” He then proceeded into "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out" followed by "Born To Run" from his 1975 album Born To Run. Towards the end of "Tenth Avenue" Springsteen did a knee slide across the stage that went a little too well and he collided with a camera. It's pretty funny moment that Bruce seemed to find funny as well.

The Boss continued his 12-minute set with "Working On a Dream" from his new album. He was joined by a gospel choir on the song which seems to be his thing lately. He closed with the mega hit "Glory Days" and finished it off by screaming "I'm going to Disneyland!"

Springsteen may not be everyone's cup of tea and I've certainly shyed away from The Boss for years but during the halftime show he brought down the house with a hell of a performance.

Oh, and I don't think there will be any question whether this year's performance was live unlike last year. Little Steven Van Zandt hit a few clunkers during the background vocals, especially in "Working On a Dream."

[UPDATE: Well, Springsteen did sing live at the Super Bowl, but it turns out that the music was all pre-recorded. One would assume all the vocals were live considering the previously mentioned clunkers.]

Springsteen and the E Street Band to play Greensboro on world tour

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band have a new album out today, Working on a Dream, and a world tour set to kick off April 1.

Springsteen and his band will play the Greensboro Coliseum on Saturday, May 2. Tickets go on sale for that show on Feb. 6 while tickets for most of the tour go on sale, conveniently, a day after their Super Bowl XLIII halftime performance this Sunday in Tampa.

I'll admit I just had to go to the Super Bowl's website to find out who's playing in the big game, but I'll definitely be tuning in at halftime. Check out the band's full schedule below.

We've covered Bruce Springsteen a lot recently, which is a bit weird, but he has kept the PR machine burning. After releasing a few free downloads from his new album Working on a Dream, NPR now has the entire album streaming on their website. In other Springsteen news, he performed at Sunday's "We Are One" concert at the Lincoln Memorial in DC as part of Barack Obama's inauguration festivities. Watch him play "The Rising" with a gospel choir and "This Land is Your Land" with the legendary Pete Seeger below. HBO will be reshowing the concert in it's entirety at 1 PM and 9:30 PM. You can watch in online as well here.

Bruce Springsteen gives away another free song

To continue building momentum towards the release of his new album Working on a Dream, Bruce Springsteen has released another free song from the album. The ninth track titled "Life Itself" is available today via Amazon MP3. The corresponding video for the track is also available on Amazon [or watch the video below].

In another promotion, owners of the Guitar Hero: World Tour game will be able to download "My Lucky Day" and "Born To Run" for free from January 27 to February 4. The songs will be available on all three platforms: Xbox 360, Wii and PlaySation 3.

Springsteen released the title track from the album for free for a day on iTunes in November. The album is due out on January 27 and Springsteen will perform during the Super Bowl half-time show on February 1.

If this album doesn't do really, really well, there's going to be some angry folks at Columbia Records.

New Bruce Springsteen video - "My Lucky Day"

After releasing the title track from his forthcoming album Working on a Dream, Bruce Springsteen has now released a video for the upbeat track "My Lucky Day." The video is exclusively available on MySpace. It takes about two minutes for the song to officially kick in during the video. The first two minutes shows Bruce and Max Weinberg working out the song. The entire video is composed of a series of studio shots featuring Bruce, Max and the other members of the E Street Band.

The video is available here and the song can be downloaded via Amazon here. Working on a Dream will be released on January 27.

Bruce Springsteen's new single FREE, today only

Bruce Springsteen's new single "Working on a Dream" which he debuted on the stump for Barack Obama is available for free today. You can download the track until midnight EST tonight via iTunes here or via Sony BMG's site here.

Springsteen will also play the new track for a huge audience during the Super Bowl half-time show on February 1.
