Video: Ben Folds covers Ke$ha's "Sleazy" to benefit Japan

Piano pop geek Ben Folds has a strong following in Japan which dates back to the Ben Folds Five days. He is also known for his irreverent covers, the most popular in recent memory being Dr. Dre's "Bitches Ain't Shit."

Now, Folds and his cohorts have taken on Ke$ha's "Sleazy." Check out a video below documenting the band recording their version of the song. You can also download the song HERE, along with songs by Tegan and Sara, Surfer Blood, R.E.M., Counting Crows and others. 100% of the proceeds will benefit Save the Children, specifically going to Japan to help those affected by recent tragedies.

Video: Ben Folds performs "Gone" acapella with Street Corner Symphony

If you've never seen the singing competition show "The Sing-Off," you're missing out, because it's the only singing competition show on television worth watching. The show pits acapella groups against each other and most of them are quite good.

The big draw of the show is that Ben Folds is one of the three judges. Last night, the second season ended and a winner was crowned, but one of the highlights of the show was Ben Folds' stepping on stage to perform his song "Gone" with fellow Nashvillians and show contestants Street Corner Symphony. Folds got animated and hammed it up for the crowd since he was not kept stationary having to sit behind a piano.

Watch the performance below and if you're so inclined, you can watch all of season two of "The Sing-Off" on Hulu.

New music video from Ben Folds & Nick Hornby - "From Above"

After releasing the album Lonely Avenue on Tuesday (check out our review here), Ben Folds and Nick Hornby have released their first music for the song "From Above."

The animated clip, created by Julius Preite who has worked on The Simpsons, brings the story of soul mates never crossing paths from the song's lyrics to life. Watch it below.

Folds is hitting the road to support the album this fall. He'll play the Fillmore in Charlotte on Saturday, Nov. 20. Tickets for the show are on sale now for $41.50 (that includes fees) here.

Album Review: Ben Folds & Nick Hornby - Lonely Avenue

The collaboration between piano pop guru Ben Folds and acclaimed author Nick Hornby, Lonely Avenue, has been a long time coming and the result was worth the wait.

The album flows much like a standard Folds album, balancing cheeky pop songs with moving ballads with great skill. Hornby's masterful wordplay and and sense of humor make he and Folds seem like musical soul mates.

"Levi Johnston's Blues" has been the much talked about track from the album which tells the sad but true story of Sarah Palin's almost son-in-law. Folds whimsical tendencies makes the story feel like any of his other characters while Hornby takes a tough yet sympathetic position on Johnston's life, using his own words from his defunct MySpace page against him in the chorus.

Folds is hitting the road in support of the album in November, but unfortunately, he has no plans to play the Triangle, though he will play The Fillmore in Charlotte on Saturday, Nov. 20. Tickets for the show will go on sale on Friday, Sept. 24 at 10 a.m. here for $41.50 (that includes fees).

New video from Ben Folds & Nick Hornby - "Things You Think"

In the process of promoting their highly anticipated album Lonely Avenue, Ben Folds and Nick Hornby took a little time to record and film a brand new song not featured on the album with the duo Pomplamoose who has become famous for the concept of VideoSong.

The process involves filming every part of the recording process and shining a little light on the multi-tracking which goes into making music. At the end, they're left with a very sharp, cool looking video.

The song they recorded is titled "Things You Think," which, like the album, features lyrics written by Nick Hornby. The album only features Folds singing, but Hornby contributed a spoken word part on this song, which is excellent. Check out the video below and the song has also been made available on iTunes.

New music from Ben Folds & Nick Hornby - "Levi Johnston's Blues"

We've mentioned the highly anticipated new album Lonely Avenue featuring the music of Ben Folds and the words of Nick Hornby a number of times before. As the release date slowly approaches, Sept. 28, we now have a track from the album to share with you.

Stream "Levi Johnston's Blues" from the album below and yes it's exactly what you think it is. It is Nick Hornby's take on the saga of Levi Johnston's life during the time when Sarah Palin was chosen as John McCain's running mate in the 2008 election. The lyrics of the chorus include actual passages from Levi Johnston's MySpace page which was deleted long ago. Enjoy.

Check out more details of Lonely Avenue here.

Ben Folds plays live on Chatroulette in Charlotte

Here is easily one of the funniest things I've seen in a while. At his recent concert in Charlotte at the Fillmore, Ben Folds logged on to the new random chat service called Chatroulette and played songs for and about the people who popped up to chat. He has been kind enough to share a video of the experience with us. The toilet guy is particularly funny. Don't worry about content because they edited out the penises. Check it out below.

Folds will be playing at Meymandi Hall in Raleigh this Thursday, March 25 with the North Carolina Symphony. Tickets are currently sold out, but a few more may get released closer to the show. Check here for more info.

Ben Folds slated to play with North Carolina Symphony

Ben Folds will play with the North Carolina Symphony at Meymandi Hall on March 25, according to one of David Menconi's tipsters.

In recent years Folds has played with numerous symphony orchestras, beginning with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra in early 2005. Folds has played Meymandi once before, in March 2006 just before the birth of this blog, but we're certainly excited that the symphony will join him on stage this time.

UPDATE: The show is official and tickets will go on sale Tuesday, Feb. 2, at 10 a.m. here. Folds is working with the symphony's associate conductor Sarah Hicks on the show. He also worked with Hicks at the Minnesota Orchestra, where she is principal conductor of pops and presentations, for a concert last Halloween.

Ben Folds plays for a large, inebriated crowd at Duke

The bi-annual concerts in the quad on Duke's campus are always an adventure. It really seems that the laws on campus are suspended when the campus throws a party and things can be a pretty crazy with a whole lot of obnoxious thrown in. But Ben Folds' performance for the Last Day of Classes party was worth the hassle.

Folds and his band, which has now expanded to four players for a lot of the set, put on a great show of songs new and old. The set wasn't too heavy on Folds' latest album Way To Normal with only five songs making their way to the set. It did however include some of the "fake" leaked versions of the album's songs including "Lovesick Diagnostician" and "Bitch Went Nutz."

While the hits of the set for the lively crowd were "Rockin' the Suburbs," "Bitches Ain't Shit" and "Kate," one excellent inclusion that seemed to go unappreciated by much of the crowd was the old Five song "Missing the War." The album Whatever and Ever Amen had so many great songs tucked between the more popular singles.

By the end of the night, the campus was wrecked and everyone wandered home and hopefully stayed out of trouble. Check out Ben Folds complete set list as well as more photos below.
