Best of 2014: Kevin's Favorites

To a lot of folks watching new music in 2014, especially in the Triangle but all over the country and the world too, this was the year of Sylvan Esso, and I would include myself in that group. After first seeing the duo at the Hopscotch Music Festival in 2013 it was easy to tell that the group was special.

In 2014 their debut album hit shelves and it did not disappoint, blending the electronic grooves of Nick Sanborn with the amazing melodies and vocals of Amelia Meath. Not only did I pick their self-titled album as my favorite album of the year but their song "Coffee" made my top songs list as well.

New Oasis video - "Falling Down"

Oasis have released the third video from Dig Out Your Soul, one of my favorite albums of 2008. The video is for the Noel sung track "Falling Down." The video mocks the British monarchy by featuring an actress who is living a double life. The band only appear in the video briefly to snub the young royal. Check it out below.

Oasis performed by New York subway musicians

In September, Oasis found a truly unique way to promote their then upcoming album Dig Out Your Soul. Sheet music for four of the songs were given to subway performers in New York City who then performed the songs for the bustling MTA patrons. Now, four months later, the band have released a documentary about the experience.

The 18 minute documentary shot by The Malloys shows the performers rehearsing the songs, three of the Oasis band members (Liam, Gem and Andy) reacting to the songs and then the musicians taking the songs to the tunnels. It's a really interesting documentary, even for those who are not Oasis fans. It's really as much about the subway performers as it is about Oasis.

And watch for Majestic K. Funk doing an a cappella version "(Get Off Your) High Horse Lady" at about three minutes in. It's amazing.

Enjoy the documentary below or here.

Oasis and Ryan Adams to tour again in December

Oasis didn't end their last run of dates on a happy note. For those who don't know, Noel Gallagher was ambushed on stage in Toronto and suffered three broken/dislodged ribs. This led to some cancellations including the band's much hyped club show in New York. Watch the much viewed video of the incident here.

That's not stopping Oasis and their new buds Ryan Adams and the Cardinals from heading out on another run of dates. The pair will hit the road on December 3 for string of US dates as well as a make-up show for a canceled show in London, ON.

Both Oasis and Ryan Adams will have new albums out when this next tour rolls around. Oasis will release their new album Dig Out Your Soul next Tuesday, October 7. Ryan Adams and the Cardinals will release their new album Cardinology on October 28.

Let's hope the jerks stay off the stage on this run.

Oasis w/ Ryan Adams & the Cardinals dates:
12/3 - Oakland, CA - Oracle Arena
12/4 - Los Angeles, CA - Staples Center

Oasis set to release 7th album in October

Oasis announced yesterday that they will release their seventh studio album on October 6 via their own label, Big Brother. The album will be called Dig Out Your Soul (hopefully the music/album art will better explain the seemingly lame title). The album will be out on October 6 in the UK and other countries, so it will presumably be out on October 7 in the US.

The album was recorded with producer Dave Sardy (who produced the band's last album) at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London.

The first single from the album will be called "The Shock of the Lightning" (yeah, wow) which will be released on September 29 and will most likely make it's way to the internet and radio considerably sooner than the official release date. Here's what Noel has said about the single:

“If ‘The Shock Of The Lightning’ sounds instant and compelling to you, it’s because it was written dead fast. And recorded dead fast. ‘The Shock of The Lightning’ basically is the demo. And it has retained its energy. And there’s a lot to be said for that, I think. The first time you record something is always the best.”

There are no US dates yet with the exception of the one show in Seattle preceding the band's Canadian tour. That tour will feature none other than Ryan Adams & the Cardinals opening each show.

Three new Oasis tunes leak

Three new tunes from British rock giants Oasis are making the rounds today on the web. The leaked tunes are supposedly demos of songs for their new album. They include the Liam sung rocker "Nothing On Me" and the more mellow, Noel sung tunes "I Wanna Live a Dream (In My Record Machine)" and "Stop the Clocks."

Oasis have been recording their new album with producer Dave Sardy (Jet, The Thrills) in London and Los Angeles. The album is expected to be released in the fall. The band finished their deal with Sony with 2005's Don't Believe the Truth and it has yet to be determined/released how the band will release this new album.

Check out the leaked demos below via YouTube before they get removed.
