Asheville Moogfest line-up includes Jónsi, MGMT, Massive Attack & more

Here is a good reason to plan a trip out to lovely Asheville, NC this fall. New bands have just been added to the line-up of the second Moogfest in Asheville, named for Robert Moog, inventor of the Moog synthesizer who was a research professor of music at the University of Asheville and lived in the city until his death in 2005.

This year's event will be held on Oct. 29, 30 and 31, and will feature a fantastic line-up including MGMT, Massive Attack, Thievery Corporation, Big Boi, Jónsi and Caribou. More artists will be announced in the coming weeks, but that's a hell of a line-up already.

Tickets for the event will go on sale on Friday, Aug. 13. We'll keep you posted on new info as it is announced.

MGMT announces new fall tour, coming to Raleigh

MGMT, who released their sophomore album Congratulations in April (check out a review here), show no signs of slowing down. They've been on tour since the album's release and have now added some new fall dates.

The new tour will bring the band to Raleigh's Memorial Auditorium on Wednesday, Nov. 3. Tickets for the show go on sale Friday, July 16 at 10 a.m. here for $36. Kuroma is slated to open.

The last time MGMT played the Triangle, they were at Local 506 in Chapel Hill in January 2008, just as their single "Time To Pretend" was breaking. Check out our old review of that show here.

Check out the music video for "Flash Delirium" from Congratulations below along with MGMT's tour schedule.

Album Review: MGMT - Congratulations

Take a moment to examine the cover art to the right. Think about how you would describe it. Bizarre? Spacey? Demented Looney Tunes? There’s no one way to describe it, but that picture is the perfect representation of the music behind it.

Congratulations, the second offering from MGMT, has already been the most talked about album on the web this year. First came the announcements from the band that there would be no singles and that they were going in a different direction than the melodious electro-pop that brought early admiration. Then came the album leak, the backlash, and the backlash to the backlash. Few albums in history have split fans more.

Pearl Jam, Metallica to headline Bonnaroo

It's a little hard to get excited over the Bonnaroo lineup after all the rumors that Led Zeppelin would headline the 2008 festival didn't pan out.

Instead, Pearl Jam and Metallica will headline this year, along with Jack Johnson and Kanye West.

Even so, there are some pretty great acts on the roster as organizers boast their "most diverse lineup ever." If that's code for "fewer jam bands," I'm in.

Artists who pique my interest include Death Cab for Cutie, The Raconteurs, Sigur Ros, Ben Folds, Iron & Wine, Rilo Kiley, Tegan & Sara, hometown heroes The Avett Brothers, Aimee Mann, MGMT and comedians David Cross, Janeane Garofalo and Zach Galifianakis.

Check out the full lineup at Bonnaroo.com. The festival will take place June 12-15 in Manchester, Tenn. Tickets will go on sale Feb. 16.

The problem with Bonnaroo, of course, is that it's crazy ass expensive and involves taking at least two days off of work. So come on, Bonnaroo people, cut me some slack at put our blog on the press list this year!

MGMT packs Local 506

It seems the stars have aligned for Brooklyn band MGMT.

A week after their performance on the Late Show with David Letterman and being featured with iTunes' song of the week, the group played to a packed house at Local 506.

At times 80s retro and at others psychedelic synth, MGMT is a really hard band to "classify." Maybe that's why on their MySpace page is says "Sounds Like: [image of a rotting carcass]." Or not.

Or, maybe the guy standing behind me said it best with, "They're so different," which he repeated about six times during their playing of "Electric Feel."

There's no doubt this show should have been moved down the street to the Cat's Cradle, but not too many people in the cramped crowd seemed to mind and they danced along to the group's single "Time to Pretend."

The band's recent exposure was undoubtedly part of the reason for such a large crowd — about a dozen people filed out of the room at the end of the song.

MGMT'S album Oracular Spectacular will be released on Columbia Records Tuesday, Jan. 22.

iTunes Single of the Week - MGMT "Time To Pretend"

This is the start of a new feature on Triangle Music where, each week, we review iTunes single of the week.

This week's download is from Brooklyn's MGMT. "Time To Prentend" is a groovy electronic pop song. The synth riffs are catchy as hell and compliment the laid back beat. The melody is clever and catchy and the layered, multitracked vocals fit the vibe of the song.

Definitely download this song.

"Time To Pretend" can be found of MGMT's album Oracular Spectacular.

MGMT will be playing at Local 506 on Thursday, January 17, with Yeasayer 9 PM.
