Triangle Music's 2010 readers' poll results

After crunching the numbers, we now have the results of our 2010 Triangle Music readers' poll. Breakout British group Mumford & Sons grabbed the top spot with their debut album Sigh No More.

Wilco's big show at the Durham Performing Arts Center in March grabbed the top concert of the year nod, which you may remember, set a record at the venue for the fastest sellout ever, though there was a little controversy over that claim.

And this year, for the first time, we included songs in our readers' poll. Cee Lo Green's brilliantly offensive pop tune "Fuck You" was the top song (it also made each of our writer's lists). You can stream all ten of the top songs below or check out the iTunes mix including all of the songs HERE.

Wilco sets DPAC record for fastest sell out

Most people expected Wilco tickets to go fast for their upcoming show at the Durham Performing Arts Center, but 17 minutes is a bit shocking. The show, slated for Saturday, March 27, set a DPAC record for fastest sell out ever with that 17 minute sell. DPAC general manager Bob Klauss is said "The DPAC staff and I will work hard to make sure we’re great hosts to the very lucky 2,700 fans who got tickets to this special show.”

So kudos to you lucky folks that secured tickets. A good night is coming your way. Check out Wilco's upcoming tour dates here.

[UPDATE: David Meconi of the N&O received a response from Wilco's people about ticket sales for the DPAC show. Check that out here. He says that 2,566 of the 2,700 tickets were distributed through proper channels.]

DPAC's first concert announcement of 2010 is a fairly big one. Wilco will play the venue on March 27 as part of an east coast run. Tickets are $35 and will go on sale this Friday, January 8 at 10 a.m. here. An opening act has not been announced.

Wilco last played the Triangle in August 2008 at Cary's Booth Amphitheatre. Their latest album is 2008's Wilco (The Album).

A complete list of the band's east coast dates is after the jump.

Former Wilco member Jay Bennett passes at 45

Former Wilco keyboard player and guitarist Jay Bennett died in his sleep on Sunday morning at the age of 45. The cause is currently unknown.

Bennett's playing can be heard on all of Wilco's albums from Being There to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. His departure from the band was documented in the film I Am Trying To Break Your Heart. At the time of his death, Bennett had been working on his fifth solo album titled Kicking at the Perfumed Air. His last album Whatever Happened I Apologize was distributed for free and is still available to download via Rock Proper Netlabel.

Check out David Menconi's post about Bennett's passing which is really well written and very interesting. I honestly know very little about him outside of the contention documented in I Am Trying To Break Your Heart. It's always sad to lose such talented musicians while they're still young.

Read Jeff Tweedy's statement released about Bennett's passing below.
"We are all deeply saddened by this tragedy. We will miss Jay as we remember him -- as a truly unique and gifted human being and one who made welcome and significant contributions to the band's songs and evolution. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends in this very difficult time."

Wilco's Sky Blue Sky hits one note from beginning to end

Wilco's highly anticipated new album, Sky Blue Sky, in usual Wilco style, is quite a leap from previous releases. While the album is vaguely reminiscent of Wilco's early records, A.M. and Being There, the album adds some jammy tones to their progressive sound.

The album is much less diverse the previous two Wilco records. It is very mellow and doesn't really digress from that sound at all. At the same time, some of the album's speed crazy, jam band-like guitar riffs seem really out of place. They remind me of a dreadful time that I had to sit through a Dicky Betts show.

The album does have a few saving graces though. The album's title track, "Sky Blue Sky," is a beautiful tune with an Jon Brion-esque, quirky pop melody that is very refreshing and very different for Wilco.

Where the album really hits is stride though, is the last three tracks.
"Waken" is an amazing quirky pop tune which may be the best track on the record. "What Light," (click the song title to download) the first song released from the new record, bears a stunning resemblence to some of Dylan's early records. It's a soulful tune complete with pedal steel and vocal harmonies that really soothe the soul. The last track is the beautiful "On and On and On." It's a very dynamic piano tune that moves very symphonically and resembles a number of tunes on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

Overall, the new Wilco record is just average. I've come to expect more from Wilco over the years and this record delivers a sound that lacks the innovation that previous records offered.

Sky Blue Sky will be out on May 15 via Nonesuch Records.
