Album Review: Alessi's Ark - The Still Life

Alessi Laurent-Marke’s third album as Alessi’s Ark, The Still Life, is representative of both her prodigious promise and youthful follies.

The Still Life comfortably fits 13 songs in just over 30 minutes. Laurent-Marke pinpoints musical ideas and wastes no time. Four songs clock in under 2 minutes, something more common in punk than in the modern folk she produces.

The cute “Money” makes its point in the first verse with money bag percussion and quickly builds to a group-sung chorus before fading out. “The Good Song” is gorgeous and would be enjoyable at five times its length, but by making it fleeting there’s more urgency to savor the song.

Album Review: Mikal Cronin - MCII

Mikal Cronin’s Merge Records debut, MCII, is a near-perfect summer record coming along just in time to dominate speakers and headphones all season.

From the opening piano line of “Weight” to the final fuzzy fade out on “Piano Mantra,” MCII is a resplendent balance of infectious melody, energy and Cronin’s shrugging vocals. There’s enough power behind the guitar lines to keep fans of Cronin’s early work satisfied while the unstoppable choruses draw in legions of new listeners.

Buoyed by bright chords, Cronin’s lyrics about indecision, uncertainty, and the desire for companionship make an instant connection. Cronin is constantly questioning himself and his actions throughout MCII, but he asks loudly and openly. For those feeling trapped by the fear of the not having an answer, these songs can prove freeing.

Album Review: She & Him - Volume 3

She & Him’s Volume 3 puts Zooey Deschanel front and center and loses some of the balance that made the duo’s previous records appealing.

Deschanel has always been more visible than her partner, but previous records played like a duet. Even when M. Ward wasn’t singing, his gorgeous compositions were level with Deschanel’s vocals. On Volume 3, he rarely sings and his music rarely breaks out of the background.

For her part, Deschanel is stronger singer. She holds her own on “London,” a vocal and piano duet that leaves her voice exposed. Her weakness is still the low register. Whenever she dips low on songs like “Turn to White” and “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me” the tone sounds forced and cartoony.
